Course Title and Grades: Physical Education Ð 7th and 8th Grades
Course Description:
Welcome to the GVJH Physical Education program. At GVJH we believe that Physical Education is an integral part of education. Research shows a direct correlation between academic achievement and physical fitness. Our program aims to provide a learning experience that is developmentally appropriate for all students. Our goal is to emphasize the optimal growth and development in the physical, mental, emotional, and social well being of all students.
We encourage parents and family members to visit our program and classes. We also, encourage students to share learning experiences by being active with family members. School, community and family involvement is crucial to the studentÕs development of positive behaviors towards fitness, wellness and being active for life.
Content and Performance Standards:
Here at GVJH, we align our Physical Education curriculum with the Physical Education Content Standards for Public Schools, California State Framework, and National Standards for Physical Education. These standards specify, ÒWhat students should know and be able to do.Ó Performance standards specify, ÒHow good is good enough.Ó They indicate the levels of achievement that students are expected to achieve within the content standards. Students are provided with daily objectives that aim to achieve these standards.
q Standard 1: Demonstrate motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
q Standard 2: Demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies as they apply to learning and performance of physical activities.
Disciplines: Motor learning, biomechanics, exercise physiology and health-related physical fitness.
q Standard 3: Assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.
q Standard 4: Demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance.
Disciplines: Human Growth and Development, Psychology, Aesthetics.
Social Development:
q Standard 5: Demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies as applied to learning and performance of physical activity.
Disciplines: Sociology, Historical perspectives.

ASSESSMENT:
Assessment of student learning aims to reflect Physical Education content standards, enhance learning, provide evidence of student performance, and yield valid information about student learning.
SCHOLARSHIP GRADE
Students are expected to:

á Maintain an accurate Portfolio/Notebook (notes, quizzes, tests, self-peer assessments, fitness logs, etc).
Students are expected to:
á Wear the GVJH Mariner PE uniform each day.
á Demonstrate proper social behavior and attitude at all times. This includes behavior before/after class and while in the locker room.
á Be prompt, prepared, positive, persistent, and polite.
á Respect the studentÕs right to learn and the teacherÕs right to teach.
*Note: Poor citizenship grades may affect scholarship grade.
