Services Provided by the Youth Service Specialist at Goleta Valley Junior High

v     Teach “Reconnecting Youth:” This elective class focuses on school improvement, mood management, and reducing substance use. If you are aware of any Goleta Valley students who would benfit from this class please notify Beth Wirth.

v     Club Live: The “Club Live” Advisor for Goleta Valley. Through Club Live we provide safe and sober activities to the youth who are committed to being drug and alcohol free. These events include lunchtime activities, community advocacy, campus wide events (like Red Ribbon Week  October 24-28), and other field trips. Club Live is always looking for committed students to be leaders.

v     One-on-ones: I meet individually with students who are having a tough time at home, in school, or socially. I listen, advise, and refer them out to more appropriate resources when necessary. If you know of a student who could use some one-on-one attention for school or social problems, please refer this student to Mrs. Wirth.

v     Adult Mentoring: Students can participate in the “Fighting Back Mentor Program,” where they can be matched with a positive adult role model to meet with them on campus after school hours once a week.

v     Friday Night Live Mentoring: This is a program where GV students can connect with a student from Dos Pueblos High School. The students do activities in big groups and meet one-on-one to talk about High School anxiety or anything else of particular significance. We will begin meeting the second week in October.

v     Mediations: We are also able to do meditations for students who are in conflict. These prove to be a very successful way to stop a problem before it grow out of proportion between students.

v     LifeSkills: We teach the LifeSkills curriculum to all the 7th and 8th grade students. This curriculum focuses on communication skills, self image, and anger management.

v     A Resource for you: I am more than happy to help you connect with community resources, information on drugs and     alcohol, or assistance with students we have in common.
